Ranch Sorting
December 5, 2020 @ 3:00 pm EST
Ranch sorting is a western-style equestrian sport that evolved from the common ranch work of separating cattle into pens for branding, doctoring, or transport.
Ranch sorting requires that two riders move a herd of ten cattle in numerical order from one round pen into a separate adjoining pen in sixty seconds or less. There is a twelve foot opening between the two pens, and also two un-numbered ‘trash’ cows that are mingled throughout the herd. In both penning and sorting, the numbers do matter – so any cow that crosses the line, either out of order or carrying the wrong number, will result in a ‘no time’ for the team.
Ranch sorting is open to everyone. The cost is for members $15 per person per team and for non-members $18 per person per team. Each team of two riders gets to gets three goes or turns. This event is being held indoors and food will be available for purchase. Free admission for spectators.
